Where to begin
In order to begin working with the government as a contractor, there are a few requirements that your small business owners must meet.
Step 1. Apply for a D-U-N-S number, which is a unique nine-digit number for each physical location of your business.
Step 2. Register with the System for Award Management (SAM). SAM is the official website to register your small business to do business with the Government.
According to Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) Subpart 4:11, the database is to intended to increase the visibility of vendor records, including their geographical locations, for specific supplies and services, and to establish a common source of vendor data for the Government to locate these vendors.
Step 3. Create an account at beta.SAM.gov to search for opportunities to sale your product or services to government agencies. Keep track of pre-solicitations, Solicitations, and contract awards you are interested pursuing.
Note that the Small Business Act of 1953 states that small businesses should receive a fair proportion of federal contracts and that small business should have the maximum practicable opportunity to participate in federal contracting.
